EPAVEL is a food supplement of omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) derived from fish oil, useful in all cases of increased need of these substances. EPA -eicosapentaenoic acid- and DHA -docosahexaenoic acid- are the main omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, essential nutrients for the body. They contribute to normal cardiac function and to the maintenance of normal blood pressure. The main mechanism of action of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids is a reduction in the hepatic synthesis of triglycerides and a simultaneous reduction in the synthesis of lipoproteins that tend to deposit rapidly. High concentrations of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may be recommended in all cases of hypertriglyceridemia. A diet rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may be helpful in alleviating symptoms of inflammation, can improve membrane function, reduce the likelihood of thrombus formation, decrease plasma triglycerides and optimize cholesterol ratios.
EPA is a precursor to prostaglandins and leukotrienes that mediate anti-
inflammatory responses and inhibit platelet aggregation. Eicosapentaenoic acid replaces arachidonic acid in the cell membrane and in this way, in addition to producing anti-inflammatory mediators, inhibits the conversion of arachidonic acid into pro-inflammatory mediators. EPA and DHA can be recommended also to optimize serum cholesterol levels. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an important component of brain tissue and nerve fibers. It is therefore evident how it can contribute to the maintenance of normal brain function, normal visual activity and heart function. EPAVEL can be a valuable aid in all cases where it is necessary to supplement the diet with a higher intake of omega-3, even during pregnancy and lactation.
